 Anthony P. Postiglione Jr. avows that Wendy Kopp had a game-changing idea in 1989.She was aware that a greater number of leaders would need to make education their life’s work in order to address the national teacher shortage and dire academic issues for low-income children that had not improved in a century. Innovatively, she planned to hire college graduates with excellent performance to teach in rural and urban schools with high need. To kick off TFA’s first recruiting season in December 1989, Wendy gathered 100 part-time student recruiters from 100 universities. In the summer of 1990, training for the first corps began.
